Asteroids Style Movement… Now with Firing Lasers

A few months ago I wrote a series on character movement. As a part of that series we discussed developing the movement for a spaceship shooter like Asteroids. Since then I’ve had multiple requests for how to make the ship fire bullets. No problem! This one is simple, super simple, you may smack yourself to the head repetitively with an iron stick for not thinking of it. But if you don’t have an iron stick, no problem, we’ll get this all squared away and you’ll be on your way to solving this sort of issue with ease from now on.

An Even Better AS3 OOP Flash Custom Cursor

In the last tutorial we created a custom cursor, in this tutorial we’ll address some issues that will make our cursor a lot more useful! Today we’ll learn to make the cursor disappear when the mouse leaves the flash window area and reappear on the return. At the same time we’ll set it up to react correctly during a right click and most importantly maintain it’s position at the top of the stage. This way newly added MovieClips will not be able to appear on top of our cursor.

This is another tutorial in the character movement series. So far on AS Gamer we’ve discussed different ways to move your game’s hero with the keyboard. Today we are going to discuss how to move your player with the mouse. There’s a few ways this can be done, we can set a default speed that our character always moves at or create movement controls where our character eases into the new position. Both movement styles are extremely useful it just depends on which mouse movement method you are wanting to use for your game. First we’re going to talk about controlling the character at a steady speed following our mouse.

So you just finished your first flash game, it’s excellent, at least you think so. I mean you put hours on top of hours into it. Your eyes have been bloodshot and you’ve pulled your hair out more than once. Needless to say, you’ve worked hard and you are incredibly proud of it (But your ego is in check, you’re not arrogant or anything :D ). So you send your game off to be spread virally around the internet and it’s doing amazing!!! You’re making all kinds of money on your advertising, then a week later some guy comes out with your game and new graphics… better graphics. But it’s the same game, seriously to the last detail it works almost the exact same way. You’re the victim of someone decompiling your game and stealing your source code! You’re game loses popularity and you just lost a lot of hard work and money!

Okay so hit tests. Hit tests simply are a check to see if two objects are touching one another. There’s plenty of ways of doing them and every shooter game needs them. AS2 had a nice little function called hitTest, AS3 has two functions…. hitTestPoint and hitTestObject. So what’s new about this hitTestPoint and hitTestObject and which one do you use? We’ll discuss it and how to make our bullets hit enemies and enemy bullets hit us.
